This is a short writing assignment that asks students to compare how a single news story is told by different types of news outlets. I use this assignment in a media literacy class on a day in which we talk about the historical development of the notion of “objectivity” in U.S. journalism and the contested cultural authority of professional journalists. I use these assignments as the basis for class discussion on the day they are turned in. This assignment is easy to modify.
