“Think outside your box” demographics assignment

This assignment asks students to critically examine a magazine they wouldn’t otherwise read, and to write a brief analysis of its audience, the way it appeals to that audience, and the “world-view” it promotes. I assign this in an intro-level Media & Society class, and the students really get into it. It encourages them to break out of their own demographic bubble and consider others’ perspectives. It also encourages them to identify the commercial purpose of many magazines.
