Here are some examples of films that I recently used with my first years to help illustrate bell hooks’ arguments about the commodification of difference in “Eating the Other: Desire and Resistance.” I used The Visitor to get students thinking about what hooks might mean by encounters based on “mutual recognition” of racism.
